Mary M. Suckow was born March 14th 1867 in Albany, New York, the fourth os a family of six children born to her parents John and Caroline Suckow.

Her parents were natives of Mechlenberg, Germany and her father was a shoe cobbler by trade.

The family moved from Albany to Clayton County Iowa then to Almakee County, and when Mary was eleven years old they moved to Hancock. County, Iowa, this was in 1878. (seven years before the Liberty Methodist Church was built, and eleven years before the town of Klemme was platted.)

Mary Suckow had five brothers: Will was a preacher, lived for some years in Forest City, was outstanding as a pulpit orator.

Henry was a farmer and contunued to operate the home farm for many years.

John was a public school teacher, he taught in Klemme, many years ago.

Edd was a carpenter, he helped put up nearly every store building on Klemme's main street.

Charles was a painter and decorator, he lived in Klemme during the early years.

On December 28th, 1888, Mary M. Suckow and Edw. J. Schaefer were married, they commenced housekeeping on a Liberty Township farm, where they continued to live for 30 years.

This union was blessed with four children: Roy I. of Klemme; Elmer E. of Liberty Township; Benjamin T. who died while in training for the first World War; and Mable L. (Mrs. Herold Ridder) of Nora Springs, Iowa

Edward and Mary Schaefer retired from the farm in 1917 and moved to Klemme where they have now spent 29 years together. In December 1947 they observed their 59th wedding anniversary.

There was ever a quiet air of hospitality about the Schaefer home, which cenetered around this wonderful home maker, Mrs Mary Schaefer.

The Schaefers were members of the Methodist Church, almost from the tome the Liberty Church was built. Mrs Schaefer was president of the Ladies Aid for several years.

For the past three years Mrs Schaefer suffered more or less form Asthma and and irregular heart, this condition became serious some days ago and the end came Monday morning, February 23, 1948. She reached the age of 80 years, 11 months and 9 days.

She leaves besides her husband and three children mentioned above: two brothers Edd Suckow, Clarinda Iowa: Charles Suckow, Clarinda Iowa, and one adopted sister, Mrs Eva Janshaw, Portland Oregon. Eleven grand children and four great grand children.

Casket bearers were Eugene Schaefer, Calvin Schaefer, Donald Schaefer, Melvin Schaefer, Erwin Blank and Emery Weaver.

Interment on the family lot, Ell Township Cemetery, Klemme, Iowa.
